Spare tire carrier concern?
« on: 11/30/09 - 08:15PM »
He's the deal. I've had to get a relocation bracket to mount my 32X11.50 on as it wouldn't clear my tube bumper, the bracket I installed moves the tire out & up 2" which is mounted & now clears everything. My concern is that the mount (bolted to the stock mount) seems too flexible with the added weight, I don't think it'll flex & crack over time, but I guess time will tell.
Has anyone experienced this before? Should I have it gusseted or...?
Thanks!

Usually the biggest failure experienced with heavy tire/wheel combos on the tailgate is fatigue of the metal but before that is the bushings in hinges wear out and the gates bend.

That sounds a bit unsettling! Thanks for the reply back. I wonder how common of an occurrence that is? Hope it's just not an "eventuality".

It happens to all of them given enough time and abuse.  If your going to keep it on your gate make sure you use an aluminum wheel etc to keep weight down.

Thanks Aaron,
It's chrome plated aluminum 15X8 that should help a bit.

Bottom line: if you got more weight than what is recommend (even if it's custom fabricated) it's gong to come off and bounce down the highway and either kill someone or make an unsuspecting truck driver...

Thanks for sharing the pic! How much further out would you say it is over the stock one? And is that a 2" body lift on your rig?
I can't seem to figure out how the heck to post pics to my album. Seems like I can only put the one on there?

well I will go get a pic of how far it sticks out since I don't have a stock carrier that came with it

and its a 3 inch BL but don't tell anyone because they flame :-(

2.5 inches of clearance between the tire and the door... I used an exhaust clamp since you caught me while I was mounting my high lift

Oooooo kay,.... I won't say anything about the BL if you won't,Lol.
So, 2.5" from tire to gate on an 8" wheel? By the way where can I find a camera like your's that has an arm attachment, I've been looking for one but can't seem to locate it. I just went & measured mine and it's @ 4.5" but doesn't look to be hanging out in the breeze. I think if I were to install a BL of at least 2" I'd clear my bumper, but I opted to get an extension/riser for it for under $30.00 Woohoo
Thanks!
