A Massave turbo on a 2.5

Found this on another site. A jeeper in joplin did this. Never understand a turbo on a jeep that is used as jeep is ment to be used (for wheelen).

A turbo works in high RPM's and trailing or crawling uses low RPM's.

Speacail as big of one that he used

What did it come off of? I had a turbo from a another 2.5 out of a Daytona 4cy given to me. I thought about doing that at one time. But I didn't think I could. So I didn't even try. That looks pretty sweet. Man that would of helped me back in the day to and from the trail, and those muddy hill climbs. I wouldn't had to down shift to 2nd gear to pull hills on the Highway.

Actually, depending on how you set the turbo up, it could be very useful in wheeling, especially when you need that extra "umph".

I am considering (and will eventually) do this to the four raging squirrels in the TJ.

Most of the time when I really, really would need extra power, I'm in the optimal RPM range as-is.

However, a properly setup turbo system can easily come on at lower RPMs. Sure, it's not necessarily as effective as a supercharger, but still can be quite effective. A smaller turbo will give you more of the low end power, and not so much topend. A large turbo will give you big boost at higher RPMs, but not the low end... I've read damn near every piece of info on turbos that I can get my hands on, and trust me, they can make bigpower and still be quite fuel economical.

Hello everyone.  This is my first post so let me introduce myself.  My name is Eric Day and I live in Webb City, MO.  That is in fact my Jeep and turbo you have discovered.  I was running 35s on my Jeep at the time I put the turbo in.  The turbo is out of a late 70s svo mustang and I purchased it on Ebay.  It's a T3 that Ford was putting on the 4cyl back in the day so it really isnt that big.  Maybe the pictures just make it look that way.

As someone said the result on the trail isn't that great.  However, it pretty much gave me back stock power on the pavement.  This is my daily driver so it helped in that regard.

I rarely get the turbo spinning up on the trail.  Not because it can't but because I have broke a rear axle once and my spider gears.  Basically I am just real timid on the trail now and don't use the throttle to get me up and over.

A turbo is not the answer to making your 4cyl better on the trail.  My next big mod will be 4.88 gears.  Gears are really the answer to a 4cyl with big tires.  In the meantime, I have downgraded to 33s.  Just got back from Disney last weekend and I can really tell a difference.  The 4cyl handles the 33s a lot better than the 35s.

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum.  Sometimes things get said without knowing what the facts are, but that happens and that's life....so thanks for letting us know the facts!!!  Rock on and Jeep on!!!

Thanks for the welcome.  I guess since I have an account now I will start posting instead of just lurking.

I wasn't trying to correct anyone.  The group was pretty much right on about what a turbo is good for, high rpms not low, speed not torque.  It was an interesting project but it's not the chevy 350 that I want.  It was a lot cheaper than an engine swap so I thought I would give it a try.

I thought it was cool that someone bothered commenting on my pictures and project.

I thought it was cool engineering.  At least you have plenty of room in front of that 2.5.

Yeah, there is a lot of room in there once you remove the clutch fan.  I swapped in a taurus electric fan.  So far the fan has kept everything cool.

You're right, a jeep is for wheelin, but if you want to wheel longer, you've got to be able to get there FAST.

Haha.  That's one way to look at it.  I wish I could say that's why I did it.  I have to trailer my Jeep though.  Otherwise my wife freaks out the entire time we are wheeling.
